The incorporation of fluorine atoms into the molecular structure of polyimides provides a means of lowering the dielectric constants of these polymers. Accompanying the lowered dielectric constant, however, is an enhanced solubility in organic solvents. Although the increased solubility aides in processability, it is undesirable for aircraft applications where exposure to hydraulic fluids and other chemicals is likely to occur. Copolymers of fluorinated polyimides with 3,3`,4,4`-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride have been prepared in an effort to achieve a matrix resin that is both low dielectric and insoluble. Films of these copolymers have been characterized for properties including solubility, dielectric constant, thermal stability, and tensile strength and modulus. Composite laminates were prepared with selected copolyimides on quartz fibers, and dielectric constants and flexural and short beam shear properties were determined.
