Order structure and crystals of fully aromatic polyimides grown from solutions

Conference ·
OSTI ID:141730
Ordered structure and crystals can be developed in segmented rigid-rod polyimides. For a series of polymers synthesized from 3,3`,4,4`-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 2,2`-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4`-diaminobiphenyl (PFMB), solution crystallization provides lamellar crystals. Electron diffraction experiments indicate that the chain`s direction is perpendicular to the substrate surface. Based on different concentrations and crystallization conditions, the crystal morphology can change from single crystals to dendritic and spherulitic textures. Electron diffraction`s fiber pattern of the polymers provide the same crystal unit cell structure compared to wide-angle x-ray fiber patterns.
