Nuclear structure of {sup 146}Nd from (n,n`{gamma}) measurements

Conference ·
OSTI ID:141220
The nucleus {sup 146}Nd has been studied with the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) reaction followed by {gamma}-ray detection, and level lifetimes were determined in Doppler-shift attenuation (DSAM-INS) measurements. These experiments were partially inspired by the erratic behavior of E1 transition rates observed in this mass region. In previous studies of N=82 isotones, it has been suggested that enhanced electric dipole transitions occur, whereas the B(E1)`s in the N=90 nucleus {sup 146}Ba have been found to be quite weak. In addition, these measurements were performed to obtain new information on mixed-symmetry states. While substantial work has already been performed on such states in {sup 144}Nd, little is known about such excitations in {sup 146}Nd. A third motivation for this work was to elucidate the nature of the low-lying 5 states in {sup 146}Nd. Recent inelastic proton scattering studies of this nucleus have thrown into question whether these states are of simple octupole parentage.
