Double-octupole excitations in the [ital N]=84 nuclei [sup 144]Nd and [sup 146]Sm

Evidence of collective octupole excitations built on spherical shell-model states is reported for the [ital N]=84 isotones [sup 146]Sm and [sup 144]Nd. In particular, good candidates for double-octupole excitations, analog to the 12[sup +] state at 3981 keV in [sup 148]Gd, have been identified in both nuclei.
