Microbial degradation of crude oil at the water table of a contaminated sand and gravel aquifer near Bemidji, Minnesota, has resulted in the development of an extensive dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plume that has migrated downgradient of the oil body. The major constituents of the DOC are nonvolatile, yellow-colored organic acids. The hydrophobic acid and hydrophilic acid fractions of the DOC have higher carbon (C) and hydrogen contents, lower oxygen and nitrogen contents, and much lower molecular weights (250 daltons) than the corresponding fractions from uncontaminated ground water. In addition, {sup 13}C-NMR analysis demonstrated that the contaminated samples have lesser amounts of carboxyl C and heteroaliphatic C and greater amounts of aromatic C and aliphatic C than the samples from the background well. These nonvolatile organic acids are of geochemical significance, being capable of interacting with hydrophobic organic compounds in addition to inorganic species in the aquifer.
