In continuation of the effort to study the reactivity of carbon dioxide coordinated to transition metals, the authors have spectroscopically characterized carbon dioxide complexes of vanadium and tantalum. The bis(cyclopentadienyl) vanadium carbon dioxide complexes are highly unstable and difficult to isolate. Bis(cyclopentadienyl) tantalum complexes are stable at room temperature under a CO{sub 2} atmosphere. Reactivity studies along with infrared and NMR spectroscopic data of these complexes will be presented. These will be compared with the corresponding niobium complexes, which have previously been studied in the authors` group.
