Aldolate complexes as thermal precursors to metal oxides: A new nonhydrolytic sol-gel strategy
- Washington Univ., St. Louis, MO (United States)
Conventional sol-gel processing involves the hydrolytic condensations of alkoxide, carboxylate, {beta}-diketonate, or mixed-ligand precursor. Alternative nonhydrolytic condensation have been little studied. The authors have recently discovered that diacetone aldolate complexes, generated in situ, undergo clean thermal eliminations to afford mesityl oxide and the corresponding metal oxides. The reactions can be performed under conditions that afford viscous sols and gels. The authors have used the non hydrolytic aldolate strategy to prepare TiO{sub 2}, BaO, and BaTiO{sub 3}. The generation and physical properties of the new precursors and the chemical pathways for their thermal decomposition will be presented.
