Four Prong $$\pi^- p$$ Interactions at 250 GeV/c
- Univ. of Maryland, College Park, MD (United States)
Four-prong $$\pi^- p$$ interactions from the Fermilab hydrogen-filled fifteen-foot bubble chamber exposed to a 250 GeV/c $$\pi^-$$ beam are studied. The data sample consists of 1292 events. Phenomenological characteristics of the interaction (notably beam and target diffractive dissociation) are described using single particle inclusive distributions in transverse momentum squared,Feynman X, and rapidity for $$\pi^-, \pi^+$$, and protons. The results of a search for the production of resonances are presented. Lower bounds on the cross-sections for inclusive $$p^{\circ}$$ (770) and $$\Delta^{++}$$(1232) production are .42 ± .09 mb and .49 ± .07 mb, respectively. The crosssection for the reaction $$\pi^- p \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^- p$$ is 625 ± 80 $$\mu$$b. The cross-section for p0 production in this channel is 149 ± 43 μb.
