The gain of a light detector built around a germanium LFD-2A photodiode is controlled by automatically adjusting the diode bias so as to have a constant delay between the pulses generated by two comparators with different thresholds connected to the photodiode output. When detecting optical pulses generated by a GaAlAs injection laser varying over a dynamic range of 20:1, the output signal instability is less than 5% and the delay jitter is less than 350 psec.
