1D Carbon- or BN-Coated Hi-Nicalon fiber reinforced SiC and Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} matrix composites were fabricated by the slurry route followed by hot pressing. The mechanical properties such as flexural strength and fracture toughness as well as structures in the composites were characterized. In the case of carbon-coated fiber reinforced composites the strength and fracture toughness were nearly constant up to a critical temperature, then they abruptly decreased above the critical temperature. Room temperature strength and fracture toughness of the composites reinforced with BN-coated fiber were considerably higher than those of high temperature.
