Anisotropy of reorientation of the director in nematic liquid crystals at the fredricks optical transition
- St. Petersburg State Univ., Peterhof (Russian Federation)
Reorientation of the director of a homeotropicaly oriented nematic liquid crystal in the optical wave field is considered. An analytical expression for the distribution of the angle of director inclination depending on the light intensity and on dimensions of the illuminated region is obtained in the one-constant approximation for the case of normal incidence. It is shown that when Frank`s moduli have different values, asymmetric distributions of the angle of inclination and refractive index occur. The ellipticity of the cross section of a light beam transmitted through the crystal is calculated and found to be of the same order of magnitude as the experimental value. 15 refs., 6 figs.
