Hydrogen Storage Tests for Cryo-Compressed Vessels, CRADA No. TC02119.0

This was a collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC as manager and operator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft (BMW), to advance the state of the art on cryogenic pressure vessel technology that would enable practical hydrogen-fueled automobiles with long driving range, high packaging density and low evaporative losses. This CRADA project was funded through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Infrastructure Technologies. The technical objective for this project was to address the main technical challenges that stand in the way of successful cryo-compressed vessel commercialization, which would be addressed through a combination of experimental work and detailed modeling. This work has the potential of producing a practical automotive hydrogen storage technology that will accelerate the transition to an environmentally friendly hydrogen infrastructure and contribute to the reduction of global warming as well as the dependence on imported oil.
