In 1986 the Committee for the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) discussed the list of actions of the third phase of the Programme for the Inspection of Steel Components (PISC III). Within the framework of Action 4 of the PISC III a capability study on cast-to-cast stainless steel welds has been conducted. This study used 3 cast-to-cast stainless steel assemblies that contained a number of flaws such as mechanical fatigue cracks, lack of fusion flaws and notches of the PISC type A. Also a number of unintended flaws were present. The diameter of these assemblies varied between 838 mm and 937 mm and the wall thickness was about 68 mm. Besides a statically cast stainless steel with a rather small grain size two different types of centrifugally cast stainless steel were considered. Eleven teams from 7 different countries participated in the round robin test. A lot of information was obtained on the performance of the teams with respect to detection, false calls, depth and length sizing. Different flaw categories were considered to identify those difficult to detect. In this paper the main conclusions from the capability study on cast-to-cast austenitic steel welds will be discussed.
