Main results of the PISC III capability studies on wrought-to-cast austenitic steel welds

In 1986 the Committee for the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) discussed the list of actions of the third phase of the Programme for the Inspection of Steel Components (PISC III) and proposed Action 4 on austenitic steel testing. Within the framework of Action 4 of the PISC III a capability study on wrought-to-cast stainless steel welds has been conducted. This study used 2 wrought-to-cast stainless steel assemblies that contained a number of flaws such as lack of fusion flaws and PISC type A flaws. Also a number of unintended flaws were present. The diameter of these assemblies varied between 838 mm and 937 mm and the wall thickness varied between 68 mm and 82 mm. Besides a statically cast stainless steel with a coarse grain size, two different types of centrifugally cast stainless steels were considered. Ten teams from nine different countries participated in the round robin test. A lot of information was obtained on the performance of the teams with respect to detection, false calls, depth and length sizing. Different flaw categories were considered to identify those difficult to detect. In this paper the main conclusions from this capability study on wrought-to-cast austenitic steel welds will be discussed.
