Tl and Cu EXAFS on Tl{sub 1}Ba{sub 2{minus}x}Sr{sub x}CuO{sub 6}

In Tl{sub 1}Ba{sub 2{minus}x}Sr{sub x}CuO{sub 6}, as the Sr concentration is varied, T{sub c} changes from 0 to 90 K, with only small effects on the local structure of the Cu-O and Tl-O planes. The authors have measured the EXAFS at both the Cu K{sub {minus}} and Tl L{sub III{minus}} edges as a function of temperature for 6 different Sr concentrations. This allows the characterization of both Cu-axial oxygen and Tl-axial oxygen bonds. The correlation between the axial-oxygen lattice instability, previously observed in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7}{sup 1} and T{sub c} is discussed. The behavior of the planar Tl-O bonds as a function of temperature is also discussed.
