Thallium cuprates Tl(Sr{sub 1{minus}x}Ba{sub x}La)CuO{sub 5} were synthesized and characterized. Single phases of Tl(Sr{sub 1{minus}x}Ba{sub x}La)CuO{sub 5} can be obtained for all values of x = 0.0-1.0, and they crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space group P4/mmm. Both the a and c lattice parameters increase smoothly with increasing x, and Tl(Sr{sub 1{minus}x}Ba{sub x}La)CuO{sub 5} loses superconductivity for x {gt} 0.3. These observations were explained on the basis of how the extent of overlap between the CuO{sub 2} layer x{sup 2{minus}y}{sup 2} and the Tl 6s bands changes as a function of the in-plane Cu-O bond length.
