The SKB company has proposed siting of an encapsulation facility for spent nuclear fuel adjacent to the central storage facility CLAB within the Oskarshamn municipality. SKB has also initiated preinves-tigations in other municipalities for a final repository. Following a format proposed by Oskarshamn, a process for an Environmental Impact Assessment has started for the encapsulation facility. The main objective of the process is to achieve public participation and a dialogue about environmental impacts of the facility. For Oskarshamn, it will be important to have reasonable assurance that a final repository can be build before a permit is given to SKB to construct the encapsulation facility. Therefore, an EIA process needs to be started also for the final repository, as well as for the transportation system.
