The atmospheric reactions of the 3 olefins 1-octene, 1-decene and cyclohexene have been studied in laboratory experiments involving olefin-ozone mixtures in the dark (with cyclohexane added to scavenge OH) and olefin-NO mxitures in sunlight. Carbonyl products of the ozone-olefin and OH-olefin reactions have been identified. The corresponding reactions mechanisms are outlined. Carbonyl yields have been measured for the ozone-olefin reaction. Sunlight irradiation of olefin-NO mixtures led to the formation of high molecular weight peroxyacyl nitrates, RC(O)OONO{sub 2}, which have been characterized.
