Thermal decomposition of C{sub 6}-C{sub 9} peroxyacyl nitrates
- DGA, Inc., Ventura, CA (United States)
Smog chamber studies of the atmospheric chemistry of high molecular weight (MW) olefins, in which high MW carbonyls are formed as major products, together with ambient measurements of carbonyls, which show high MW carbonyls to be abundant, suggest the possible importance of high MW peroxyacyl nitrate (RC(O)OONO{sub 2}) formation pathways. Once formed in the atmosphere, penoxyacyl nitrates are removed by their reaction with OH and, more importantly, by their thermal decomposition, which increases rapidly with increasing temperature. In this study, we have measured the thermal decomposition rates of high MW peroxyacyl nitrates (n-C{sub 5}H{sub 11}-C(O)OONO{sub 2} and n-C{sub 6}H{sub 13}C(O)OONO{sub 2}) relative to that of PAN (CH{sub 3}C(O)OONO{sub 2}). Preliminary data for the n-C{sub 7} and n-C{sub 8} peroxyacyl nitrates will also be presented.
