A series of tough/toughenable one-pot epoxy systems has been developed for use in liquid molding applications, particularly resin transfer molding. These moderately crosslinked epoxies (CET; crosslinkable epoxy thermoplastics), having moduli greater than 3.2 GPa and Tg between 140{degrees}C and 200{degrees}C, exhibit superior physical and mechanical properties as compared to those of conventional epoxy materials. The present talk will focus on a simple description of the CET epoxy chemistry, and its effect on processing characteristics, and mechanical properties of the polymer along with examples of fracture phenomena in neat resin, adhesive, and composite forms. Effects of epoxy network structure on modulus and toughenability, due to rubber particles as well as rigid thermoplastic particles, are also addressed.
