Complexes 1a-c have been synthesized in order to examine the effect of varying bite angles of tridentate phosphine ligands on these Pd catalysts. For the electrochemical reduction of CO{sub 2} to CO in acidic dimethylformamide, significant changes in selectivity for CO, catalyst lifetime, and catalyst degradation products are seen as a function of ligand chelate size. The origin of these effects will be discussed. In addition, the synthesis, characterization and evaluation as CO{sub 2} reduction catalysts of 1a-c will be presented in detail, as well as the synthesis and characterization of the phosphorous donor ligands.
