Thermal processing of unused waste products, the Sasol perspective

Conference ·
OSTI ID:126476

As a large petrochemical company, Sasol invariably produces substantial amounts of unused products. In line with its environmental policy, dumping of such materials is no longer acceptable. Consequently, Sasol has pledged, not only to stop the dumping of waste materials but also to clean up existing waste in an environmentally friendly manner. Thermal processes have been identified as possibly the most promising and proven technology available for recovering the hydrocarbons. Not only are these processes environmentally friendly but, in the Sasol context, economical as well. Furthermore, some of these processes have the added advantage that contaminated soils may be remediated as well. Following in-house research and development up to process development unit scale, a number of commercial processes were identified as being suitable. Furthermore, the 97 Lurgi gasifiers operated by the Sasol group offer an additional opportunity for {open_quotes}pyrolysing{close_quotes} part of such waste materials. The economy is further enhanced by the existence of tar/hydrocarbon upgrading facilities as well as an existing and expanding heating fuels market.
