Sasol - a proven prescription to convert tons of coal to barrels of fuel

Journal Article · · Ind. Heat. (Pittsburgh); (United States)
OSTI ID:5412873

This article reports on status of the coal liquefaction Sasol projects in South Africa, with emphasis on the operating results from Sasol Two. Sasol Three is essentially a duplicate of Sasol Two. Its start-up is envisaged in late 1982. Each plant is designed to process about 40,000 metric tons of coal per day. Coal passes from the mine to the coal preparation units, from which the fine coal goes to the power stations and the sized coarse coal to the Lurgi gasifiers. In the gasifiers, the reactions occur to produce a raw gas which also includes tars, oil, naphtha, phenols, and ammonia. The purified gas stream goes to the Synthol fluid bed reactor units along with hydrogen and carbon monoxide produced by reforming the methane formed in the processing. The reaction products from the Synthol system go to produce recovery units.
