The development of catalysts to control the emission of environmentally unacceptable compounds is increasingly important as stricter air and water quality standards are put in place. FT-IR spectroscopy can be a useful tool for studies related to environmental catalysis and photo-assisted catalysis. We are currently using FT-IR spectroscopy to investigate the decomposition of halogenated hydrocarbons and nitrous oxide on high surface area oxides and oxide supported metal catalysts. From the IR data, we can determine adsorption sites and mechanisms for these reactions. The results of our study will be presented and discussed.
