Silica and alumina were prepared for use as solid catalyst support materials and characterized by a variety of techniques including BET, hydrogen and carbon monoxide chemisorption, and H{sub 2}-D{sub 2} isotope exchange. The bimetallic cluster compounds [(PPh{sub 3})(H)Pt(AuPPh{sub 3}){sub 7}](NO{sub 3}){sub 2} and [Pt(AuPPh{sub 3}){sub 8}](NO{sub 3}){sub 2} were supported on these solids and characterized by the above methods and by various spectroscopic techniques. The catalytic activity of the supported clusters was determined. For example, the supported dusters were active as hydrogenation catalysts and for H{sub 2}-D{sub 2} isotope exchange. These results will be compared to those of other catalysts, and to the same catalysts under homogeneous conditions.
