Transition metal-gold cluster compounds. Their use as models for bimetallic surface catalysts
- Univ. of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN (United States)
Transition metal-gold cluster compounds such as [Pt(AuPPh{sub 3})8](NO{sub 3}){sub 2}, [Pt(PPh{sub 3})(H)(AuPPh{sub 3})7](NO{sub 3}){sub 2}, and [Pt(PPb{sub 3})(AuPPh{sub 3})6](NO{sub 3}){sub 2} have been shown to be effective catalysts for H{sub 2} activation under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions. Kinetic and mechanistic results will be presented for the H{sub 2}/D{sub 2} equilibration reaction (H{sub 2} + D{sub 2} = 2HD) using a wide variety of well characterized polymetallic clusters. These and related clusters have also been supported on alumina and silica and characterized by chemisorption, reactivity, and spectroscopic methods. The clusters remain intact on the supports and show excellent hydrogen activation catalysis. Data will be presented for several catalytic reactions. The results of these studies should be helpful in understanding the synergism displayed by heterogeneous, bimetallic catalysts.
