We have performed a thorough study of the background current and surface signals from the base activated glassy carbon electrode. The electrode was electrochemically activated in a 1.00 M NaOH at a potential of 1.20 v (SCE) for five minutes. We have cataloged each surface signal and the background current over the electrode potential range from the cathodic to anodic break down limit. We have also studied the various sources of current contributing to the background. Using a kinetic analysis we have found background contributions from classical double layer charging, surface faradaic signals and roughness.
