Boiler 100 is a Babcock & Wilcox Co. radiant boiler erected in 1950 to provide steam to a Westinghouse 60 MW Non-condensing turbine and the Steam Distribution System within New York City. The boiler operates at 1500 psi and is rated for 1,100,000 lbs/hr continuous steam flow or 1,400,000 lbs/hr maximum steam flow. The boiler operators with 100% makeup water supplied by a demineralization plant with carbon filters and 3 cation - anion trains. The feedwater source is New York City water. The water treatment plant lacks capability for removal of non-reactive silica. Non-reactive silica concentration varies seasonally in New York City water. This paper examines the uncontrollable losses associated with boiler flowdown required for removal of reactive silica. The paper describes in detail, the diagnoses of water treatment equipment performance problems and the resulting impact on boiler performance. This is done by examining real data taken during a period in early 1992 when boilerwater filica levels and blowdown quantities were unusually high. The paper discusses plant improvements and the resulting heat-rate changes. The improvements included resin replacement, increased instrumentation, and improved water treatment plant operation.
