U.S. gas companies seek niches in decontrolled power industry
Scores of US companies are using their gas industry experience to take advantage of opportunities arising from reform of domestic power regulations. FERC`s long effort to bolster gas industry efficiency and reliability by encouraging competition in US interstate markets forced the gas industry to make many tough economic and logistical decisions. FERC late last March issued the much anticipated open access notice of proposed rulemaking (NOPR), dubbed giga-NOPR, for the US power industry. With it, FERC began leading the power industry down the same competitive, open access path upon which it earlier had led the gas industry. Many gas marketing and transportation firms see an opportunity in power industry reform to apply trading skills and tools they developed to manage competitive gas supplies and services. The paper discusses the growing synergism between the natural gas industry and electric utilities, regulatory action, gas-fired power plants, reform of the power industry, gas marketing, market benefits, and benefits for utilities.
