Computer simulation of the fatigue endurance of welded joints

Conference ·
OSTI ID:115508
The paper describes a comprehensive model for the prediction of endurance of welded joints. The model is based on a cycle-by-cycle simulation of fatigue damage. Both short and long crack propagation are taken into account. The developed model has been confronted with fatigue test data obtained on butt and cruciform welded specimens of various structural steels. Test data obtained on butt-welded specimens with deliberately introduced undercuts have also been used for comparison purposes. A fair agreement has been evinced between the test data and the modeled ones and, moreover, the statistical pattern of behavior has been predicted in terms of the Weibull distribution, a strong feature for validating the model for practical applications. The utility of the model consists in its prediction potential per se, as well as in the possibility to perform in a PC environment parametric studies on the influence of key factors on the fatigue endurance. The palette of the available key parameters encompasses those related to the material, geometry (including defects configuration), and loading characterization of deterministic or random pattern.
