Sigma XI and U.S. Army scientists: An innovative partnership for science education
- Army Natick Research, Development, and Engineering Center, Kansas, MA (United States)
The Natick Chapter of Sigma Xi, the U.S. Army Natick R,D&E Center and the U.S. Army Research Institute for Environmental Medicine have established a multifaceted program of science education and outreach to local schools. This program provides support to state, regional and local science fairs; mentoring of students; class lectures and demonstrations; science minicourses; teacher-for-a-day programs; technical tours and laboratory research opportunities. These activities are facilitated by partnership agreements with school systems and by several U.S. Army-sponsored programs to foster science, mathematics and engineering education. Processes have been developed to engender interests of scientists, to encourage school and student participation, to build partnerships, and to coordinate outreach activities. This program is one of several U.S. Department of Defense programs designed to augment national science, mathematics, and engineering education.
