Scientists and educators facilitating science education through school-based family learning programs
- Laboratory for Astrophysics, Washington, DC (United States)
- National Zoological Park, Washington, DC (United States); and others
Last year the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) and National Zoological Park (NZP) co-sponsored an educational outreach experiment, Learning is a Family Experience (LiFE). LiFE`s goal was to create friendly bridges to science and technology for forty-seven local area elementary and middle schools with a high proportion of minority and/or low income students. LiFE provided a school-based family field trip, within a framework of classroom activities. Scientists and educators used the space sciences in an interdisciplinary framework, to teach young and old the process of science. The program, mated to the curriculum, included five elements: teacher in-servicing; a donation package to the schools; a special evening at the NASM for students, parents and teachers; pre-and post-visit activities; and program assessment. We will report on exit questionnaire data, identify scientific/educational partnerships.
