Title: An application of transient stability analysis to the PSI Energy transmission system

Power system stability deals with the ability of a power system to respond to a disturbance or a perturbation. This disturbance may be small in which the system equations may be linearized around the operating point and solved with linear techniques. This is the solution technique used to find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the power system. These are used to find any electromechanical oscillations between machines and the rest of the power system or voltage instability. Whereas, if the disturbance is large, the nonlinear differential and algebraic equations will have to be solved without the luxury of linearization. The large disturbance solution refers to transient stability analysis. If, upon the application and removal of the disturbance, the system is damped and settles in a finite period of time to a stable operating condition or equilibrium point, the system is deemed stable. An alternative to the time domain simulation is to apply direct methods or Lyapunov/energy function analysis. This method distinguishes the state of the power system into potential and kinetic energies. The disturbance is analyzed to determine if the angular trajectory of the machines will go beyond a potential energy boundary surface (PEBS) or instability. If the trajectory returns away from the PEBS, the system is stable and will settle to an equilibrium point. An alternative or simplified approach is to use the approach of the equal area criteria. Each disturbance is examined as a one-machine-infinite-bus power system.
