The discovery of high-transition-temperature (high-T{sub c}) superconductivity in the La-Ba-Cu-O system by Bednorz and Mueller in 1986 sparked immense experimental effort devoted to the synthesis, study, and potential practical applications of high-T{sub c} oxide phases, primarily in the Y-Ba-Cu-O, Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O, and Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O systems. However, an analysis of reports published in 1989-1993 demonstrates that the major characteristics of the new high-t{sub c} materials (critical-current density J{sub c}; stability under exposure to magnetic fields, elevated temperatures, voltage, and other service conditions; resistance to atmospheric attack; and other factors) do not attain technological levels for any of the known preparation techniques cryochemical synthesis, spraydrying followed by sintering, spray pyrolysis, or any other modifications of the ceramic process.
