Uranium tetrachloride or thorium tetrachloride dissolve in a solution of Me{sub 2}NCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}NMe{sub 2} (tmed) in toluene to give green UCl{sub 4} (tmed){sub x} or UI{sub 4}(tmed){sub x}, where X lies between 1 and 2. The tmed complexes are useful synthons for other ligand complexes as well as for (MeC{sub 5}H{sub 4}){sub 4}Th.
