Pin-on-disc testing was used to generate wear particles from 304 and 440C stainless steels in presence of low-velocity interfacial air flows from a laminar flow bench. The aerosolized wear generated particles were studied using optical particle counters. In some cases, the particles were also collected using an electrostatic precipitator. The tests showed that 440C pins in unlubricated sliding contact with 440C discs and 304 discs generated mostly submicron particles, but that many of these submicron particles were detached from the wear surfaces as parts of agglomerated macro-particles.
