Transfer soldering is a hand-soldering technique used to complete printed wiring board (PWB) or wire-to-terminal joints. The technique consists of carrying enough molten solder on a soldering iron tip to fill the connection. This evaluation compares PWB solder joints made by transfer soldering to those made by the conventional technique (as defined in documents such as MIL-STD-2000). Physical and metallurgical properties were compared between the two techniques. Also the potential degradation from thermal cycling of joints made by the two techniques was compared. Results from these tests confirm that there is no difference in reliability between transfer-soldered joints and conventional hand-soldered joints. 5 refs.
