Coal-fired high performance power generating system. Quarterly progress report, October 1, 1993--December 31, 1993

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:10147760
This report covers work carried out under Task 3, Preliminary R&D, Task 4, Commercial Operating Plant Design and Task 5.1, Design Deficiency Analysis, under contract DE-AC22-92PC91155, {open_quotes}Engineering Development of a Coal Fired High Performance Power Generation System{close_quotes} between DOE Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center and United Technologies Research Center. The goals of the program are to develop a coal-fired high performance power generation system (HIPPS) by the year 2000 that is capable of: > 47% thermal efficiency; NO{sub x}, SO{sub x} and particulates {le}25% NSPS; cost {ge}65% of heat input; all solid wastes benign. To achieve these goals the team has outlined a research plan based on an optimized analysis of a 250 MW{sub e} combined cycle system applicable to both frame type and aeroderivative gas turbines. Under the constraints of the cycle analysis they have designed a high temperature advanced furnace (HITAF) which integrates several combustor and air heater designs with appropriate ash management procedures. Efforts to find high temperature, corrosion resistant refractories by approximating the coal ash composition is continuing. Some success has been achieved in identifying a refractory binder that will dissolve in the slag and raise the solidus temperature of the mixture to force it to freeze in the pores of the refractory surface. Some preliminary results have been obtained in tests of the weldability of a candidate FeCrAl alloy. Initial results show welds of high quality which maintained their protective alumina scale after 100 hrs exposure to 2000{degrees}F air. Advanced flue gas desulphurization (FGD) systems that can enhance the baseline design are being analyzed for compatibility with the rest of the system.
