FY 1997 community transition plan

The Department of Energy (DOE) weapons production mission at the Pinellas Plant, in Largo, Florida, was ended after 40 years of service in September 1994. At its peak the Pinellas Plant employed over 2,000 and made a direct financial impact on the region of about $200 million annually. The Pinellas Plant is located in the Tampa Bay metropolitan statistical area (MSA) which has already lost over 9,000 jobs due to defense downsizing. Shutdown of production, transfer of capability to other sites and the cleanup and final turnover of the Pinellas Plant to the community will be completed by October 1, 1997. DOE`s Pinellas Plant close-out mission includes the mitigation of adverse impacts to the communities and workers affected by this reconfiguration of the weapons production complex. The DOE`s primary objective in addressing these impacts is to effectively transition the workers and mitigate the impact on the local community. This transition activity involves stakeholders comprised of local community officials, private citizens, the local business community, former and current workers at the plant and neighbors in the surrounding community. The Pinellas Plant`s Community Reuse Organization (CRO) is dedicated to the creation of jobs through defense conversion and other efforts to stimulate local growth. This report describes the status of the various transition projects.
