Environmental assessment for commercialization of the Pinellas Plant

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/10194332· OSTI ID:10194332
The US Department of Energy (DOE) issued the Finding of No Significant Impact on the Proposed Action to consolidate certain nonnuclear component manufacturing operations of the Nation`s Nuclear Weapons Complex. The direct consequence of the Proposed Action presented in the Nonnuclear Consolidation Environmental Assessment is the closeout of Nuclear Weapons Complex defense missions at the Pinellas Plant. DOE decided on November 22, 1993 to phase out the Pinellas Plant and transition the Plant to the Office of Environmental Management, with the goal of releasing the site for commercial use. The potential adverse local economic impact caused by this action is considerable. The DOE Pinellas Area Office (PAO) seeks to fulfill the Secretary`s Economic Development Initiative to commercialize surplus facilities at the plant. The goal of the Secretary`s Economic Development Initiative is to make DOE resources available to community partnerships for local business development that supports the President`s broader objective of stimulated economic growth. This Economic Development Initiative established clear objectives concerning future use of surplus DOE facilities.
