  1. BNFL Engineering Div., Risley (United Kingdom)

British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) operate a full range of fuel cycle services at their divisional sites in the UK. At Sellafield, Magnox Spent Fuel Reprocessing has been performed for 30 years. BNFL have now designed and constructed a new oxide fuel reprocessing plant (THORP). Both Reprocessing Plants have associated Wet Spent Fuel Storage Facilities. This paper describes BNFL`s main achievements in the provision of these facilities from the design perspective, to meet the major operational and safety criteria to be fulfilled. It relates some operational experience of receiving and storing spent fuel in the facilities constructed. Future developments requiring attention at the design stage are briefly mentioned.
