Title: CELLFS: TAKING THE "DMA" OUT OF CELL PROGRAMMING

Abstract

In this paper we present a new programming model for the Cell BE architecture of scalar multiprocessors. They call this programming model CellFS. CellFS aims at simplifying the task of managing I/O between the local store of the processing units and main memory. The CellFS support library provides the means for transferring data via simple file I/O operations between the PPU and the SPU.

  • When operating liquid gas containers, specially those of a cylindrical shape and geometrical content of 75 - 350 m3, situations very often occur, when, for various reasons, a fast evacuation and flushing has to be undertaken. There normal method - displacement of gas by means of inert gas and subsequent flushing with air - requires relatively much time. In emergencies or other special situations this method is not always practicable. Furthermore, the provision of a flare installation is not in every case possible without problems. This displacement action prevents the formation of explosive mixtures in the first place and is,more » therefore, to be preferred before all other measures which foresee the containment of either the source of ignition or the effects of an explosion. However, the latter measures are to be preferred: - if no effective protection against possible explosions can be obtained by devitalization. This can be the case if, for instance, decomposition reactions occur which require no atmospheric oxygen, or - if secondary explosion-protective measures also offer a sufficient safety margin and if they are at the same time economically more favourable. It was exactly the last-mentioned principle of the methods for the prevention of ignitable gas/air mixtures in containers and production devices which led to the development of the described method.« less
  • Traditionally, those elements of exposure assessment used by industrial hygienists has always been surrounded by a little mystery often referred to by the health and safety community as ``professional judgment.`` Many trade journal publications over the past 10 years have attempted to sequence the logical steps used by industrial hygienists during the exposure assessment process; however, there has been limited field testing of some of these sequenced steps. With the resurgence of importance for development of a Generic Exposure Monitoring Standard by OSHA, the need for exposure assessment protocols that any health and safety professional can use becomes more important.more » Texaco Inc. Industrial Hygiene has been implementing an industrial hygiene program development protocol called ``HYGenesis`` for the last two years in primarily exploration and production operations. At the same time, INSIHT, a database which integrates Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Medical, and Training information, has been developed and tested. This document discusses the use of the HYGenesis protocol for Basic Workplace and Job Characterizations and Qualitative Exposure Assessments, and INSIHT for development of sampling strategies for Quantitative Exposure Assessment and Recordkeeping. These are four key elements being proposed to OSHA for a Generic Exposure Assessment Standard.« less
  • One year ago, the Air Combat Command in association with an External Review Group (ERG) comprised of EPA, several states, public interest groups, and others published a guidance document entitled Moving Sights Faster Through Streamlined Oversight. The focus of this guidance is to utilize the trust relationships that build with partnering to streamline the bureaucratic processes associated with the structure of the predominantly paper driven cleanup programs. At last year`s Superfund conference, the authors spoke of the ideas behind this effort, and of the ongoing demonstration at Langley Air Force Base. One year later, the authors have substantially more experiencemore » with the concept they called Variable Oversight. They also have documented the power of the Variable Oversight process in saving time and money, and some of the impediments to achieving the full gains they would hope to achieve in this process. Savings at Langley AFB due to Variable Oversight implementation have been substantial--exceeding $2 million and eight months time from the front end of the investigation process. As work plans move into the next phase, savings will continue to grow. Partnering, five basewide documents, ten consensus agreements, standard report formats, and alternative deliverables have provided the framework for alternative approaches to the review of large documents. Despite initial successes, a number of impediments remain before Langley can expect to achieve the full benefits of Variable Oversight. The purpose of this paper is to outline the experiences at Langley AFB, the evolving understanding of the power of Variable Oversight, and lessons learned from the Langley demonstration.« less
  • China's 11th Five-Year Plan (FYP) sets an ambitious targetfor energy-efficiency improvement: energy intensity of the country sgross domestic product (GDP) should be reduced by 20 percent from 2005 to2010 (NDRC, 2006). This is the first time that a quantitative and bindingtarget has been set for energy efficiency, and signals a major shift inChina's strategic thinking about its long-term economic and energydevelopment. The 20 percent energy intensity target also translates intoan annual reduction of over one billion tons of CO2 by 2010, making theChinese effort one of most significant carbon mitigation effort in theworld today. While it is still too earlymore » to tell whether China willachieve this target, this paper attempts to understand the trend inenergy intensity in China and to explore a variety of options towardmeeting the 20 percent target using a detailed endues energymodel.« less
  • In the State Scientific Center of Russian Federation - Institute of Physics and Power Engineering (SSC RF-IPPE, Obninsk), which is under Minatom jurisdiction, the procedures for carrying out emergency physical inventory taking (EPIT) were developed and tested in cooperation with the Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA). Here the emergency physical inventory taking means the PIT, which is carried out in case of symptoms indicating a possibility of NM loss (theft). Such PIT often requires a verification of attributes and quantitative characteristics for all the NM items located in a specific Material Balance Area (MBA). In order to carry out the exercise,more » an MBA was selected where many thousands of NM items containing highly enriched uranium are used. Three clients of the computerized material accounting system (CMAS) are installed in this MBA. Labels with unique (within IPPE site) identification numbers in the form of digit combinations and an appropriate bar code have been applied on the NM items, containers and authorized locations. All the data to be checked during the EPIT are stored in the CMAS database. Five variants of anomalies initiating EPIT and requiring different types of activities on EPIT organization are considered. Automatic working places (AWP) were created on the basis of the client computers in order to carry out a large number of measurements within a reasonable time. In addition to a CMAS client computer, the main components of an AWP include a bar-code reader, an electronic scale and an enrichment meter with NaI--detector--the lMCA Inspector (manufactured by the Canberra Company). All these devices work together with a client computer in the on-line mode. Special computer code (Emergency Inventory Software-EIS) was developed. All the algorithms of interaction between the operator and the system, as well as algorithms of data exchange during the measurements and data comparison, are implemented in this software. Registration of detected anomalies and generation of reports on EPIT results can be also performed with the help of the EIS code. Since EPIT procedures in their essence are supposed to be used infrequently but suddenly, and taking into account that additional personnel should be involved, much attention was paid to the creation of a user-friendly interface. The effectiveness of the developed procedures, AWPs and EIS was confirmed by the exercise carried out at IPPE. All the anomalies specially created for this exercise were detected during the exercise.« less
