Management of liquid effluents at the Hanford Site
The Hanford Site, located in south-central Washington State, covers approximately 1450 km{sup 2} (560 mi{sup 2}) of semiarid land that is owned by the US Government and managed by the US Department of Energy. In 1943, the Hanford Site was selected for nuclear reactors, chemical separations, and other activities related to the production and purification of special nuclear materials. Today, the mission of the Hanford Site is environmental remediation and restoration. This paper will review activities to bring liquid effluent discharges (waste water) on the Hanford Site into compliance with both the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (1), and the Clean Water Act of 1977 (2). A summary is presented of ongoing liquid effluent activities, including the determination and implementation of Best Available Technology.
