About

Science Research Connection delivers science information to the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) community. Using a variety of search options, patrons can access over 7 million bibliographic records and one million full-text documents spanning more than seven decades of DOE research. Domestic energy R&D performed by DOE and predecessor agencies, as well as foreign energy research obtained by the Department are available.

Science Research Connection includes both unclassified/unlimited and controlled access information, depending on the level of approved access. The product requires either IP authentication and/or registration and access is free of charge.

Special features include search result manipulation, save search capability, alerts, shopping cart, field sorting and downloadable bibliographic data to CSV/Excel, JSON, XML, and EndNote. Basic search is available which utilizes a degree of term-mapping, as well as an advanced or “fielded” search, with numerous metadata fields that may be specifically searched. Science Research Connection also uses Boolean operators, as well as sophisticated search options including wild card and proximity searching.

Science Research Connection is intended for scientists and information specialists as a way to advance science and sustain technological creativity by making R&D findings available and useful to DOE researchers.

Please follow these U.S. Department of Energy recommendations for selecting a suitable password:

Your password should not include your own name, nor, to the best of your knowledge, that of close friends or relatives.
Your password should not include your employee serial number, Social Security number, birth date, phone number, or any information about you that could be readily learned or guessed.
Your password should not, to the best of your knowledge, include common words that would be found in an English dictionary, or from another language with which you have familiarity.
Your password should not, to the best of your knowledge, employ commonly used proper names, including the name of any fictional character or place.
Your password should not contain any simple pattern of letters or numbers, such as "qwertyxx" or "xyz123xx".
The passwords you use on your unclassified systems should be different than the passwords employed on your classified systems.

Search Tips
Simple Syntax
Single words can be searched with no special syntax required. For example, a search on DOG will return all documents where the word DOG appears.
Multiple words entered as search terms must all appear in the document in order to be returned in the search results, or, in other words, an implicit AND is added between each term. For example, a search on DOG CAT will find documents where both DOG and CAT are present.
Special term prefix syntax used by some search engines such as Alta Vista is not supported. For example, searching on +DOG -CAT will return all documents where both +DOG and -CAT are present (not likely).
Phrases
Phrases can be searched by using double quotes. For example, a search on "BIG EXPLOSION" will return documents where the word BIG is followed immediately by EXPLOSION.
Reserved words (AND, OR, NOT, NEAR), when appearing inside double quotes, will be treated as searches on the word, and will not act as Boolean Operators. For example, a search on "DOG AND CAT" will find documents where the entire phrase, "DOG AND CAT" appears.
Wildcard operators inside a phrase will operate as wildcards. For example, a search on "CIRCUS TRAIN*" will find documents containing any of the following phrases: "CIRCUS TRAIN", "CIRCUS TRAINING", "CIRCUS TRAINERS".
Phrases can be joined together using Boolean Operators. For example, a search on "DOG HOUSE" OR "DOG RESIDENCE" will find documents where either the phrase "DOG HOUSE" or the phrase "DOG RESIDENCE" appear.
Boolean Operators
Searches on DOG AND CAT will return all documents where both DOG and CAT appear. Searches using the Boolean operator AND must have two conditions on which to operate; therefore a search on AND CAT will find documents where both AND and CAT are present.
Searches on DOG OR CAT will return all documents where either DOG or CAT appear. Searches using the Boolean operator OR must have two conditions on which to operate; therefore a search on OR CAT will find documents where both OR and CAT are present.
Searches on DOG NOT CAT will return all documents where DOG appears and CAT does not appear. Searches using the Boolean operator NOT must have two conditions on which to operate; therefore a search on NOT CAT will find documents where both NOT and CAT are present.
Searches on DOG NEAR CAT will return all documents where both DOG and CAT appear, however the relevance is increased for documents where the two terms appear closer together. Searches using the Boolean operator NEAR must have two conditions on which to operate, therefore a search on NEAR CAT will find documents where both NEAR and CAT are present.
Wildcards
The asterisk (*) is used as a multi character wildcard.
For example, a search on NUCLE* will return documents containing any of the following terms: NUCLEAR, NUCLEUS, NUCLEOPROTEIN. Term expansion using the multi character wildcard is limited, and will result in a search error if the term is too vague. Vagueness depends on the density of the known portion of the word (NUCLE in this example). If a search results in an expansion error, more characters will be required in order to more uniquely identify the desired terms. For example, a search on N* will likely result in a term expansion error.
An asterisk may also be used inside a string of characters. For example, a search on H*GENEOUS will return documents containing any of the following phrases: HOMOGENEOUS, HETEROGENEOUS.
Asterisks may not be used as the beginning of a term. For example, a search on *ETEROGENOUS will result in a search error.
The question mark (?) is used as a single-letter wildcard.
For example, a search on DO? will return documents containing DO, DOG, DOT, DOE, DOI).
If a search results in an expansion error, more characters will be required in order to more uniquely identify the desired terms. For example, a search on T? will likely result in a term expansion error, since many terms or words start with the letter T.
A question mark may also be used inside a string of characters. For example a search on C?T will return documents containing any of the following phrases: CAT, COT, CPT.
Question marks may not be used as the beginning of a term. For example, a search on ?ETEROGENEOUS will result in a search error.
Order of Operation
The default order of operations (precedence) for all supported Boolean Operators is NEAR, NOT, AND, OR.
Unless overridden by use of parenthesis, the default order of operations will be used. Expressions are evaluated in order from left to right according to the precedence of their operators, or order of operation. Operators with higher precedence are applied first. Operators of equal precedence are applied in order of their appearance in the expression from left to right.
A search on DOG NOT CAT OR MOUSE will return documents where DOG appears and CAT does not appear, or the term MOUSE appears. This can be demonstrated, using the default order of operations, by the mathematical model: (DOG NOT CAT) OR MOUSE. Since NOT has a higher order (precedence), its expression is evaluated first.
A search on DOG NOT (CAT OR MOUSE) will return documents where DOG appears and neither CAT or MOUSE appear. This is an example of overriding the default order of operations by using parenthesis.
Numbers
When using numbers in search criteria (other than full text), best results are obtained by entering the numbers without punctuation or spaces.
Although some numbers are searchable if enclosed in delimiters, full-text searching for numbers is not recommended.
Custom Syntax Query

SRC's Custom Syntax Query provides an opportunity to create and modify your own manual search query. Using the Custom Syntax Query, you can search SRC by defining the parameters and terms you would like to search. For help with forming searches, please see:

SRC and Custom Syntax Query Crosswalk Schema

Following is a list of SRC fields with the corresponding Custom Syntax Query (CSQ) field to use in a search. (For further examples and valid search parameters, please refer to the technical documentation found here: Solr Query Syntax )

Your Search Results

Search results include the fields’ size, title, creator(s)/author(s) (and possible research organization information), date and ID number displayed in a spreadsheet-like format. Additionally, from your search results page you may choose to:

Show to display one of 18 additional fields (with an additional column in the results) using the dropdown arrow in the “Make a Selection” box
Sort by Title or Date columns by selecting the small arrows in the right-hand side of the field
Sort by Relevance ranking (default)
Refine your search
Export Query to capture your results (CSV/Excel, XML, JSON, EndNote supported)
Select Previous, Next or the respective number of a results page to navigate between search results pages
See results of interest by checking the box to the left of each result. This will save results on a Summary Page (access by View Checked Items) for future reference. This summary is retained until the Clear Checked Items option is selected or your browser session is ended. This allows you to perform multiple searches using different criteria and have all checked items retained in a single list.
fulltext
More on your Results Display
The default number of results per page is 10. You may change this number with selections up to 100.
The data for the returned records will include the following in a table format in this default order:
Selectable check box
The size of the file and a Full Text PDF icon, if the full text is available electronically and you have permission to view the full text. Document size will also be included.
Optional column, if an additional field was requested of data not displayed in this table by default.
Title of the work
Author(s), including in-line affiliations
Date of publication
Identifying Numbers (will show report number, DOE contract number, other identifying numbers)
Date and Author column headers are hyperlinked so that when selected, the existing search is rerun with the returned results sorted by the selected column.
Each title displayed is hyperlinked to the Bibliographic Citation Screen for that record.
Each author (identified by separation of a semicolon) in the authors data element is hyperlinked so that when selected, a search is performed on the selected author only. The format of the author search is the same as if you had performed a phrased searched on Author from the Fielded Search Screen. For example, if you select the Smith, John hyperlink, it will refresh the current Search Results Screen with the same data as when you perform a User-Defined Search on author for "Smith, John".
Managing Your Results
Items selected via the selectable check box will be retained in your browser session and can be seen by selecting View Checked Items near the top left of the results page. The checked items will persist until you select to clear all previously selected items. This will allow you to perform multiple searches using different criteria and have all selected items retained in a single list.
Once selected, you may opt to Clear [all] Checked items.
You may opt to remove single items from their list by deselecting the Check Box.
You may opt to view your list of selected results on the Search Results Screen, titled View Checked Items, so that only selected items are shown. Once you select this option, the Refine Search and View Selected Items options will no longer be available until a new search is performed.
You may opt to download the bibliographic data for all your selected items in CSV/Excel, XML, JSON, or EndNote library format. Selecting this option (presented as an Export Cart link) will present you with the option to save the file directly to your own storage space. All the selected records will be included in the downloadable file.
Bibliographic Citations

Go to the Bibliographic Citation page by selecting the title of the document on the Search Results page. From this page you can:

View all metadata associated with a document.
View the full text by selecting the pdf icon (when the full text is available).
