The Pulserad 422 electron beam facility at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has been used to investigate the interaction of an intense electron beam with a deuterated target assembly. The performance of the apparatus, consisting of a deuterated polyethylene (CD2) cathode tip, an insulated CD2, disk with a tapered hole through its axis in the anode plane, and an insulated rear target of CD2, was monitored with neutronic, optical, and electrical measurements. Open-shutter and image-converter photographs comprise the main optical measurements. The electrical characteristics observed were the voltage and current at various locations in the geometry along with microwave observations in the area between the front and rear targets. Neutronic information was obtained in the form of total yield from silver activation, fission foil track and sulfur activation methods, and time-resolved yield with time-of-flight oscillographs from scintillator-photomultiplier detectors. Average neutron total yields of ~10 10 n/pulse were obtained with the standard CD2 target geometry, and a high-energy neutron group was reproduclbly observed by time-of-flight when CDg had been used in the cathode tip, anode, and rear target. An energy assignment of 14 MeV for this peak would not be inconsistent with other data obtained.
