The Middle Jurassic Coal-Bearing Formation in western Georgia has been the object of investigation for a long time. The Tkibuli-Shaori and Tkvarcheli coalfields, which are of great national economic importance, are studied particularly intensively. In the available literature, until the end of the 1940s, the problems concerning principally coal-bearing sequences of some coalfields were elucidated. Systematic study of a coal-bearing association as a whole was conducted at the end of the 1940s and during the 1950s. The results of these studies were summarized. This paper deals with the results of the lithological and facial investigations of the coal-bearing association in western Georgia, which were carried out within the International Geological Correlation Program No. 166 of the International Project {open_quotes}Correlation of Coal-Bearing Formations{close_quotes} under the Problem II {open_quotes}Global Correlation of Processes Accumulation and Transformation of Coal-Bearing Formations{close_quotes} under the Supervision of P.P.
