The primary goal of this research is to apply chemistry developed in the author's research group to the synthesis of labeled T-2 toxin and T-2 tetrol. In order to optimize the chances for reaching the goal, the research effort was split into two parts. In one part, a route had previously been successful for the total synthesis of calonectrin was modified. In the other part, a new and potentially much shorter route to T-2 toxin was explored. Neither route has yet been completed. The route to calonectrin should be readily amended for the synthesis of T-2 toxin. An improvement of the original synthetic route that would have shortened it by five steps is illustrated.
