The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was established to conserve wildlife and their habitats. An area called 1002 is a thin slice of coastal plain, 30 miles wide and 100 miles long, located between snow-clad mountains and the permanent pack ice of the Beaufort Sea. This are comprises one twelfth of the refuge and is the breeding ground for many birds and mammals. However, geologists have reason to believe that this area is rich in oil reserves. If Congress decides that this area can be leased for oil exploration, the refuge could suffer from side effects, such as air pollution, disruption of wildlife, and frequent oil spills.
