The kinetics of the photoinduced reductive dissolution of ..cap alpha..-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ by bisulfite in anoxic colloidal suspensions have been investigated. Quantum yields, ..cap alpha../sub Fe(II)/, as a function of wavelength for Fe(II)/sub aq/ production were obtained. Photochemical reactivity has been discussed in terms of the excitation of the O/sup 2 -/ to Fe/sup 3 +/ charge-transfer band of ..cap alpha..-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and in terms of photoassisted charge-transfer reactions of Fe(III)-S(IV) curficial complexes.
