Inertial speed control coupling for a gas turbine engine
This patent describes a gas turbine engine having a gas generator section for producing a flow of high energy gases and a free power turbine section driven by the gases for rotatably driving an engine load, a speed control device, comprising: an epicyclic gear assembly having a first gear, a second gear, an annular array of differential gears meshed between the first and second gears, and a cage supporting the differential gears for rotation about their individual axes and for orbital motion about the rotational axes; the first gear is connected to and rotatably driven by the free power turbine section; one of the second gear and cage is connected to and rotatably driven by the gas generator section; the other of the second gear and cage includes an inertial mass and is cooperatively driven by one of the second gear and cage and by first gear at a substantially constant speed during steady-state engine operation. The inertial mass has a rotational inertia substantially greater than the rotational inertia of the free power turbine section to couple the free power turbine section to the gas generator section. This temporarily resists rotational speed change of the free power turbine section during a transient load condition.
